The bottom line is this: Time doesn’t move backwards. So every moment we spend pining for a return to past eras or the spirit of those eras is wasted.

It should be no surprise that consuming a constant diet of negative news causes anxiety and distorts our view of reality. It hurts our mental health. If we don’t stop doing this it’s self-harmful; and according to Dr. Rubin, that means it’s self-hatred.

When we drug ourselves to blot out our soul’s call, we are being good Americans and exemplary consumers. We’re doing exactly what TV commercials and pop materialist culture have been brainwashing us to do from birth.

It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don’t do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.
